Tune up Internet access speed

Before an internet connection is done, DNS resolution
is the first thing that is required. DNS stands for Domain Name Service.
Though XP handles DNS resolution, you may still gain by increase the
DNS Cache size. To do this, open the registry editor by going to START
- RUN and type Regedit and hit enter. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Dnscache\Parameters add the following DWORD entries with given values

"CacheHashTableBucketSize" Value: 00000001
"CacheHashTableSize" Value: 00000180
"MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit" Value: 0000fa00
"MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit" Value: 0000012d

Removing shared documents folder from My Computer window

Open registry editor by going to START-RUN and entering regedit. Once in registry, navigate to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ My Computer \ NameSpace \ DelegateFolders You must see a sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. If you delete this key, you have effectively removed the my shared documents folder.

Boosting response time of start menu

Open registry editor by going to START-RUN and entering regedit and
navigate to key HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay . Change the value (default may be 400) to 5 or 50
or even 0. This should speed up.

Enhancing Network throughput

Network throughput depends on a variety of factors and as such you never no what could be the bottleneck. One of things that we can try out is the network redirector reserves. Open registry editor by going to START-RUN and entering regedit and navigate to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters. Once here, click on right pane and add following Dwords with the given values. This may help networkthrough put but there is no guarantee.

"MaxCmds" Value: 00000068
"MaxThreads" Value: 00000068

Removing Recycle bin from your desktop

Open Regedit by going to START - RUN and type Regedit and
hit enter. Then you should navigate to following entry in registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Desktop\NameSpace\
{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and delete it. This action should remove recycle bin from your desktop.

Customize logon prompt with your own words

Open Registry by going to START-RUN and entering REGEDIT and
Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]. In right pane, look for key by the name "LogonPrompt". Set its value to whatever text you want to see displayed at login screen.

Searching the synonyms

If you want to search a term along with its synonyms, you can do that by placing a tilde sign(~) immediately before the search term.
For eg:
to search for food facts and nutrition and cooking information use
~food ~facts.

Limiting search to a domain

Include site: in your search string, Google will restrict the results to those websites in the given domain. For eg: downloads site:www.microsoft.com will find pages about downloads within www.microsoft.com. download site:com will find pages about download within .com urls. Please note there can be no space between the "site:" and the domain.

Other Searching options

If you use allintitle: at the start of search string, Google will restrict the results to those with all of the search words in the title. For eg: allintitle: Windows Vista will return only documents that have both "Windows" and "Vista" in the title.

If you use intitle: in your search string, Google will restrict the results to documents containing that word in the title. For eg: intitle:Windows Vista will return documents that mention the word "Windows" in their title, and mention the word "Vista" anywhere in the document (title or no). Please Note there can be no space between the "intitle:" and the following word.

Putting intitle: in front of every word in your search is equivalent to putting allintitle: at the front of your search string intitle:Windows intitle:Vista is the same as allintitle:Windows vista.

If you use allinurl: in your search string, Google will restrict the results to those with all of the query words in the url. For eg: allinurl:Windows Vista will return only documents that have both "Windows" and "Vista" in the url.

Note that allinurl: works on words, not url components. In particular, it ignores punctuation. Thus, allinurl:Windows/Vista will restrict the results to page with the words "Windows" and "Vista" in the url, but won't require that they be separated by a slash within that url, that they be adjacent, or that they be in that particular word order. There is currently no way to enforce these constraints.

If you use inurl: in your search string, Google will restrict the results to documents containing that word in the url. For eg: inurl:Windows Vista will return documents that mention the word "Windows" in their url, and mention the word "Vista" anywhere in the document (url or not). Please note there can be no space between the "inurl:" and the following word.

Putting "inurl:" in front of every word in your query is equivalent to putting "allinurl:" at the front of your search string inurl:Windows inurl:Vista is the same as allinurl: Windows Vista.

Google search tips III

Google, the search engine, provides us with many advanced search options some of which I would like to discuss in this post.
Searching cached pages

cache:
If you wish to perform a search on the cached document(older pages) of a particular website you can use this option. For eg: if you wish to search office on the cached pages of microsoft.com you can perform the query like cache:www.microsoft.com office Please note that there is no space between "cache:" and the web url. Performing this query on google will highlight the word "office" in the content of the cached document of www.microsoft.com.

Searching through the links

link:
If you wish to perform a search for the webpages which links to a particular website you can use this option. For eg: querying link:www.microsoft.com will list the pages that links to www.microsoft.com. Please note that there is no space between "link:" and the web url.

Searching similar pages

related: Using related: with a web url in the google search will list the webpages similar to the specified url. For eg: related:www.microsoft.com will list the pages which are similar to www.microsoft.com. Please note that there is no space between "related:" and the web url.

Getting the definition

define:
Using define: with the query string will provide you with a list definition of the query string which google gathered from various online resources. For eg: define:Oracle will provide you with the definitions of Oracle from various online resources. If you typed a phrase it will include all the words in the exact order you typed them.

There are many more to come....

Google search tips II

While performing a search a search for a particular search string we get number of links with the document files of different types like doc, pdf, xls, ppt etc. I have wondered what if I wanted to search only the word documents or pdfs or the power point presentations containing the search string I specified while performing the google search. I found a command which google provides to limit your search to the filetypes you require. Suppose you want to search the pdf files containing the string "growing the kids" you can specify the string with the filetype command for example "growing the kids" filetype:pdf.
Google can search the string you specified in various types of documents. Google can search the contents of the following file types :
  • .pdf (Adobe Acrobat PDF)
  • .ps (Adobe Postscript)
  • .doc (Microsoft Word)
  • .xls (Microsoft Excel)
  • .ppt (Microsoft Powerpoint)
  • .rtf (Rich Text Format)
  • .txt (Text)
  • .swf (Macromedia Flash)

Performing a search on google can be a nightmare at times, getting the search results more than what you want. Moreover at times most of the results are irrelevant to you. Google search results can however be reduced to be specific to your requirement.
Most of us try to be specific in searches applying the trick of enclosing the search string in quotes and some others of us try putting a plus sign (+) in front of the search terms in the search string. There are many more simple tricks which can be used while performing the searches on google to get the better and more specific information of use.

Booleans are friend

When performing searches we usually try typing the words, phrases that we want to search. Google search engine considers that you want search all the terms or words you specified in the search string. For eg. if you type tips "SQL Server" Oracle as a search string it is same as typing tips AND "SQL Server" AND Oracle. If you want to search sites with tips on SQL Server or tips on Oracle you can try tips OR "SQL Server" OR "Oracle". You can be more specific by surrounding the search terms in parenthesis. For eg. tips("SQL Server" OR Oracle) will be same as searching tips AND "SQL Server" OR tips AND Oracle.
