Google, the search engine, provides us with many advanced search options some of which I would like to discuss in this post. Searching cached pages
cache: If you wish to perform a search on the cached document(older pages) of a particular website you can use this option. For eg: if you wish to search office on the cached pages of microsoft.com you can perform the query like cache:www.microsoft.com office Please note that there is no space between "cache:" and the web url. Performing this query on google will highlight the word "office" in the content of the cached document of www.microsoft.com.
Searching through the links
link: If you wish to perform a search for the webpages which links to a particular website you can use this option. For eg: querying link:www.microsoft.com will list the pages that links to www.microsoft.com. Please note that there is no space between "link:" and the web url.
Searching similar pages
related: Using related: with a web url in the google search will list the webpages similar to the specified url. For eg: related:www.microsoft.com will list the pages which are similar to www.microsoft.com. Please note that there is no space between "related:" and the web url.
Getting the definition
define: Using define: with the query string will provide you with a list definition of the query string which google gathered from various online resources. For eg: define:Oracle will provide you with the definitions of Oracle from various online resources. If you typed a phrase it will include all the words in the exact order you typed them.
There are many more to come.... |
